Two Kings: Sleep On It At Your Own Peril

BREAK IT DOWN!

The White House’s official social media account posted a photo of President Donald Trump standing alongside Britain’s King Charles III  and captioned it: “TWO KINGS.” With a single line (and a crown emoji), a routine image from a diplomatic visit instantly became a cultural Rorschach test—read by supporters as humor and by critics as something more pointed, and decidedly ominous.

The timing, as always, mattered. King Charles’ trip came wrapped in ceremony—greetings, speeches, and the pageantry and pomp that follows a monarch abroad—while American politics at home has been simmering with arguments over executive power, democratic norms, and the language leaders use to describe themselves. Set against that backdrop, “Two Kings” didn’t land as a neutral joke; it landed as a message…explicitly distinct, and wildly divergent.

In the United Kingdom, “King” is a constitutional role tied to tradition and heredity. In the United States, it’s a warning label—etched into the country’s origin story and its suspicion of concentrated power. That’s but one of the reasons why the phrase can feel jarring, when applied to an elected president, even as metaphor. And let’s be clear, many Americans do not believe for a nanosecond that there is even a scintilla of jest, or metaphorical nature associated with the principal occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue making comments about being a king. It collapses two very different kinds of authority into one punchline, and it invites the public to argue over whether that collapse is harmless branding or an intentional provocation.

It also imposes a collision with the slogan that has shown up at rallies and on signs: “No Kings.” For opponents of everything Trump, the language of monarchy is shorthand for fears about an “imperial presidency.” For all-in supporters, it’s often used ironically—as an eyeroll at critics, or a boast about strength and dominance. When an official government account steps into that arena, it blurs lines: between governance and campaigning, between state communication and internet trolling, and between viscerally competing narratives of saving America.

There’s a diplomatic cost to that blur, too. Visits like this are usually meant to highlight shared interests—security, trade, alliances, and the long, complicated history between two close nation state partners. But social media rewards the sharp caption over the substantive agenda. “Two Kings” dominated the conversation because it was designed to: it’s short, loaded, and impossible to ignore.

Whether you saw the post as playful (own the libs) or provocative (he seriously wants to be a King), it’s a reminder that in a Faulkner-ish, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past” kind of way, symbolism is never “just” symbolism when it comes from an institution with the imprimatur of the Office of the President. A White House account doesn’t speak like a private citizen; it speaks with the weight and gravitas of the Presidency…(or the would be King). And when it chooses the language of crowns, it shouldn’t be surprising that the public responds by asking the question America has asked since its founding and rejection of King George III: who holds power—and how should they talk about it? “Two Kings: Sleep at Your Own Peril!”

Fifty Years: Another Jubilee

BREAK IT DOWN!

It has been asserted that time flies. Yet, most of us would agree 50 years is an appreciable span of time. I think that’s a fair assessment. And yet, this past weekend, I celebrated a Golden Jubilee for the  fourth time in a quadrennial. And that’s not an exaggeration.

Since May 2022, I attended my 50th High School Class Reunion in Belhaven, NC, in 2023, I celebrated 50 years as a member of the Epsilon Zeta Chapter of my Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc., in 2025, I participated in my Golden Anniversary College Graduation Ceremony at Fayetteville State University, and in 2026, this past weekend to be precise, I culminated the work of the Organizing Committee by being on hand at the Golden Jubilee Gala of the Mu Zeta Chapter of my Fraternity, that I helped Found, while matriculating as a Graduate Student at UNC.

The events of this past weekend, which was definitely a celebration, differed from the other observances in a very critical manner. I was a member/participant in the first three occasions. But, in both 1976, and in 2026, I was an active organizer, planner, and executer. Interestingly, in retrospect, the process of researching, planning, organizing, and executing the activities of the first MZ  Pledge Line in 1976 consumed 6-7 months of intensely frenetic activity. By contrast, preparing for the Golden Jubilee festivities played out over an entire year.

The events of MZ50, the final elements of MZ Week, were meticulously planned, and scrupulously executed. Thursday activities included Small Group Reunions, consisting primarily of individual Lines. This was an important activity because over the course of MZ’s 50 years, the Chapter initiated 48 Lines in 50 years.

On Friday morning, there was a Golfing outing at Finley Forest Golf Course, followed by a gathering at The Pit, where the Brothers of the most recent Line, The PHinal Reckoning of Omertà, Strolled. Friday evening’s Brother’s Reception convened in the Carolina Blue Zone, the most exclusive section of Kenan Football Stadium.

On Saturday, the array of Brotherhood engagement included the Tar Heel Ten-Miler, Basketball, two service projects conducted at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Research in Black Culture and History, one for Students in STEM, and one 120 members of the unhoused community, convened an MZ Business Meeting, also held at the Stone Center. The Crown Jewel event of the weekend, the Mu Zeta Golden Jubilee Gala was held at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center. The Gala featured a video appearance by the Fraternity’s General President, Lucien J. Metellus, and in-person appearances by Past General President, Everett B. Ward, Southern Regional Vice President, Matthew S. Bradford, and the NC District Director, Luico R. Holland. In addition to the Necrology Service, paying homage to the 22 MZ Brothers, who have transitioned to Omega Chapter, Mrs. Betty Burney, the Widow of the Charter Line Dean of Pledges, Brother Calvin Burney, Sr., made brief remarks. She was accompanied by Brother Calvin Burney, Jr., Brother Owen Burney, and Brother Terence Burney, Brother Burney’s son and Brothers, respectively.

The Golden Jubilee culminated Sunday morning with an Ecumenical Service at the Sheraton, Chapel Hill. Brother Rev. Rodvegas Ingram delivered a stirring message. Over the course of the weekend, Registration and attendance were strong. More than 175 Brothers attended the Friday evening Brothers Reception, over 100 Brothers attended the Business Meeting Saturday afternoon, more than 250 Brothers and guests attended the Gala Saturday evening, and 125 Brothers and guests attended the Ecumenical Service. “Fifty Years: Another Jubilee!”

Be Honest; Would You Believe The Image Depicted A Doctor If Anybody Else Said That?

BREAK IT DOWN!

Not much to say about this one. Last Sunday, Easter, the man we call President shared an expletive-filled rant on his Truth Social platform directed at Iranian leaders. While a post of this ilk from a U.S. President would have drawn widespread attention anytime, that this one appeared on Resurrection Sunday sparked quite a controversy. Of course, with D-Trump, most controversies are short-lived, because they are pushed out of the headlines…you guessed it, by the next controversy.

True to form, fast forward a week, and on this past Sunday, Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself, agreed by most observers far and wide, as a Jesus-like figure, complete with bright light emanating from both hands. Not surprisingly, the post sparked a controversy of its own.

Those who follow current events know that Trump has been engaged in an escalating tête-à-tête, a feud really, with Pope Leo. The image drew widespread criticism. Even some of Mr. Trump’s staunchly religious conservative supporters, people who regularly go to the mat for this POTUS, complained. In fact the intensely negative reaction, notably from his core support group, resulted in Trump doing what Trump seldom does…taking down one of his ridiculously offensive posts.

Of course, Trump being Trump, he did not simply take down the image. Neither did he take it down and apologize. No, he took it down, or had it taken down, and claimed it was not what your lying eyes saw. Rather, he said of the image, that it was not reimagining himself as Jesus; rather that it depicted him as a doctor. As usual, he said this with a straight face.

Back to the Pope-POTUS beef. Pope Leo criticized the war that jumped off after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran as inhumane. Not long before publishing the image, some commentators would say, in response to the Pope’s criticism, Trump posted a lengthy screed against Pope Leo, calling him “WEAK on crime and terrible for Foreign Policy.”

However, there is no need to overreact to this kerfuffle; there will be another soon enough. The question I leave with you, especially MAGA/Trumpers is, “Be Honest; Would You Believe The Image Depicted A Doctor If Anybody Else Said That?

Redefining the Easter Message in the Trump Era

BREAK IT DOWN!

Americans are known for many things. One of the issues front and center at this moment in time is, being led by a President who derives his power and popularity from the populist, so-called MAGA Movement and from the religious fervor and loyalty of evangelicals. The two groups, while not aligned on every issue tend to have one thing about which they are virtually always joined at the hip: their support of Trump.

Republicans in general, and evangelicals in particular revel in the assertion of their right to be heard, as Christians, and to have free and unfettered expression and practice of their religion. They are passionate, fervent, and relentless in demanding the right to have everyone respect their religious views.

This past Sunday was Easter, widely acknowledged as one of, if not the holiest of days in all of Christianity. In America, and across the world, wherever Christians abide, believers, parishioners, and worshippers gather on Easter Sunday to commemorate the Crucifixion and three days later, the Resurrection of the Savior.

It is in that light that we reflect upon the irony of what could loosely be called the President’s Easter Messge.

On Easter Sunday morning, someone who shall not be named posted the following message on the President’s social media account, Truth Social, signed, or signed off on by the President:

“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah.”

Put aside the president’s uninhibited, if not unhinged, rhetorical flourishes; the very idea of attacking civilian infrastructure such as power plants and bridges is generally considered under the rubric of war crimes by international law experts.

But wait, it’s Easter. How could Christians, particularly otherwise enthusiastically pious evangelicals, overlook the crass nature of the vulgar, profanity-laced language of Trump’s message?

Oddly, two well-known (not to mention millions of no so well known) evangelicals did just that. Franklin Graham, son of Billy, and Robert Jeffress, not only refused to denounce Trump, they actually praised him. Graham actually compared Trump to Esther in the Bible, sent to save the Jews, as he simultaneously cast the entire Iranian government as Islamic lunatics.

I’m not at all certain the government in Iran is comprised of lunatics. Trump himself has claimed he killed all the lunatics. He said Monday that there has been regime change in Iran, and that the current government functionaries are smarter, sharper, and far less radical. Which is it, Franklin? Whom Should I believe; you or Trump? “Redefining the Easter Message in the Trump Era!”

The Final Fours Are Here: Are You Ready?

Break It Down!:

If you like college basketball, Men’s and/or Women’s, it’s Hype Week. The festivities kick off Friday night with the ladies in Phoenix, where the University of South Carolina Lady Gamecocks will tip off in the opener against the UConn Lady Huskies. The Winner will play for the Title against winner of the nightcap between the University of Texas Lady Longhorns and the UCLA Lady Bruins. These same four teams made last year’s Final Four, and this year, represent an all-chalk matchup, as all four Number 1 Seeds reached the Final Four.

The first game arguably features the two titan programs of today’s game. The coaches, Dawn Staley and Geno Auriemma, and the programs, South Carolina and Connecticut, respectively are the standard for the contemporary game. The Lady Huskies bested the Lady Gamecocks in last year’s Title Game. This may be like having dessert before the entrée. But the second game is nothing to sneeze at. Texas and UCLA are powers in their own right. Don’t sleep on this matchup. As noted, both were in last year’s Final Four. Moreover, UCLA’s only loss this year was courtesy of Texas. Fortuitously for fans, perhaps, because they are playing in the Semis, one of them is guaranteed a ticket to the Championship Game. We just have to wait to see which team will emerge victorious in Friday night’s game.

Over on the Men’s side, a little less chalk. Only half of the Number 1 Seeds advanced, and somewhat like on the Women’s side, the best teams on paper meet in the Semi-Finals, as Michigan Wolverines and Arizona Wildcats clash in the late game. But don’t get it twisted, the early game features the Number 3 Seed Illini against the Number 2 Seed Connecticut Huskies. Illinois stormed through the competition to reach Indy, winning all four games by double digits. And lest I remind you, Number 2 Seed Connecticut defeated Duke, the overall Tournament Number 1 Seed to reach the Final Four.

The Women’s Title Game will unfold Sunday, followed by the Men’s Championship Monday Night. This is not a gambling sight, so I’m making no prediction on winners or point spreads. I will say the odds are 100% that the weekend will offer a panoply of great basketball. By all means, if you are a fan of the Men’s Game, the Woman’s Game, or both, tune in. “The Final Fours Are Here: Are You Ready?”
